New on DVD & Blu-ray, Week of August 31: 'Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Too?', 'Harry Brown' and 'Marmaduke'
There's plenty of thrills on tap this week on the DVD front: 'Harry Brown' offers the thrills of revenge as Michael Caine plays a retired English gentleman who mounts vigilante justice when his neighborhood is terrorized by hoodlums; 'Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Too?' offers the thrills (and chills) of marriages on the rocks; and 'Marmaduke' offers the thrills (for kiddies, at least) of a CGI Great Dane running amuk across the big screen. But the major action takes place on Blu-ray this week: Anchor Bay has released a high-def version of the always scary 'The Evil Dead' and Paramount has put together a two-disc "Rich Mahogany" edition of Will Ferrell's 'Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.' New on DVD & Blu-ray, Week of August 24: 'The Back-up Plan' and 'City Island'
Both of this week's theatrical-to-DVD outings revolve around secrets, lies, and deceptions. In the comedy-of-errors 'The Back-up Plan,' Jennifer Lopez's Zoe gets pregnant just before meeting the man of her dreams; things get complicated when she decides not to tell him about it. In 'City Island,' an entire family hides things from each another, making for a gifted comedy of errors in which the truth unravels but enriches everyone's life. Help Me, Obi-Wan -- I Have 'Star Wars' OCD!

Last weekend, at the official LucasFilms geekfest known as Star Wars Celebration, George Lucas himself announced that the complete 'Star Wars' saga will be released on Blu-ray in 2011.
For me and many others, this was both amazing and troubling news. On the one hand, purchasing a new version of 'Star Wars' on some sort of home video format has become a little like voting for president or caring about soccer -- it's something we have to do once every four years.
On the other, being a completist is an expensive and tiring pursuit. Come next year, when I will most assuredly purchase the Blu-ray set, I will have owned eight different incarnations of the original trilogy. Eight!
You might be asking, "Why in Hoth does he do this?" And it's hard not to ask that of myself. This is essentially the same movie, after all. I quite enjoyed 'Spies Like Us,' too, but it's not like I've ever felt the need to shell out for that hilarious 1985 movie more than once. How does Lucas rope me into this every time?
Let's take a look at how something like this can keep happening -- because, remember, those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.Continue reading Help Me, Obi-Wan -- I Have 'Star Wars' OCD!

New on DVD & Blu-ray, Week of August 17: 'The Last Song' and 'Furry Vengeance'
Adults: Skip this. The two major theatrical-to-DVD releases this week are for teen girls and kids under 10. For the teens, there's 'The Last Song,' which stars Miley Cyrus as a petulant musical prodigy who finds love and meaning on the beach; no, she's not a combination Joan Jett/Gidget, but a Nicolas Sparks heroine. Next up there's 'Furry Vengeance,' a live-action/CGI comedy that tried to be eco-friendly but ended up making few friends at the box office -- even among the kids it was aimed at. New on DVD & Blu-ray, Week of August 10: 'Date Night' and 'Death at a Funeral'
Two comedies that involve mistaken identity, slapstick and farce come to the fore this week. First there's the Steve Carell-Tina Fey pairing in 'Date Night,' in which a staid married couple decides to enliven their relationship by painting Manhattan red -- but with unintended consequences. Then there's 'Death at a Funeral,' a remake of a British comedy about a dysfunctional family attending their patriarch's funeral -- also with a host of unintended consequences. New on DVD & Blu-ray, Week of August 3: 'The Ghost Writer,' 'A Prophet,' 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' and 'Kick-Ass'
This week's batch of DVD releases has something for everyone. For mystery/thriller fans there's Roman Polanski's taut suspenser 'The Ghost Writer,' about a scribe who gets more than he bargained for when he takes on writing the memoirs of a scandal-ridden ex-British prime minister. If you like crime and/or prison dramas, then the French import 'A Prophet' -- which explores the intricate political hierarchy of the prison system -- is for you. Teens will like 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid,' a comic-inspired take on life in that worst of all institutions, middle school. And, lastly, for superhero fans there's 'Kick-Ass,' which ramps up the violence vigilante quotient to the nth power. Read on.Permalink | Email this | | Comments

New on DVD & Blu-ray, Week of July 27: 'Clash of the Titans' and 'Repo Men'
There's plenty of action on DVD this week, both from the past and the future. 'Clash of the Titans,' a remake of the 1981 cult-camp-classic, zooms home with swords, monsters, gods, demons and a lot of beards. The action-adventure was lauded for being good, old-fashioned B-movie entertainment, but panned for a weak script and paycheck acting. Fast forward to the future of 'Repo Men,' where getting behind on your bills could mean your life. This sci-fi actioner gets marks for special effects but depends too much on gore and dumb buddy banter. Read on.

New on DVD & Blu-ray, Week of July 20: 'The Runaways' and 'Mother'
As summer heat hangs over much of the U.S. it's time to cool off with a couple of off-beat productions this week. First there's 'The Runaways,' a high-octane musical biodrama about the first all-girl rock 'n' roll band that features stand-out performances by 'The Twilight Saga's' Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning. Then there's South Korean director Bong Joon-Ho's ("The Host") 'Mother,' a harrowing tale of a devoted mother who will do just about anything to prove that her retarded son didn't commit murder. And finally, a wonderful low-budget guilty pleasure sci-fi actioner produced by the Roger Corman factory comes to home video after too long an absence, 'Forbidden World.' New on DVD & Blu-ray, Week of July 13: 'Greenberg', 'Chloe,' 'Our Family Wedding' and 'The Bounty Hunter'
Love is in the air this week on DVD -- in all its weird permutations. First you have Ben Stiller as 'Greenberg,' a fortysomething lost soul looking for love and meaning and finding it in a most unusual place. 'Chloe' ratchets up love (and lovemaking) by throwing a wrench into a seemingly happy family in the form of an escort to test marital fidelity. Next there's 'Our Family Wedding,' a comedy that pits an African-American family against a Mexican-American family when their kids decide to get married. And lastly there's the love-hate relationship of 'The Bounty Hunter,' which pits ex-marrieds Gerard Butler and Jennifer Aniston against each other in a comedy about (you guessed it) a bounty hunter who has to track down his ex-wife. New on DVD & Blu-ray, Week of July 6: 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo', 'A Single Man' and 'Brooklyn's Finest'
It's a confusing world out there -- as epitomized by this week's DVD releases. First up is 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,' an anything-but-straight-ahead mystery thriller about he unlikely teaming of a journalist and a female computer hacker who investigate a 40-year-old crime. Then there's the angst of 'A Single Man,' about a college professor who has to navigate a post-relationship life in 1960s Los Angeles. And, finally, there's 'Brooklyn's Finest,' about three dysfunctional cops trying to survive one week on the mean streets of New York. Read on.Permalink | Email this | | Comments

New on DVD & Blu-ray, Week of June 29: 'The White Ribbon,' 'The Crazies' and 'Percy Jackson'
There's evil in the air this week -- metaphorically and literally. In Michael Haneke's award-winning 'The White Ribbon,' a German village is plagued by a series of horrific events that spring from the repressed lives of the town's children. In 'The Crazies,' a mysterious toxin enters a small town's water supply, turning the people into bloodthirsty killers. And in 'Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief,' the children of the gods of Mount Olympis must battle a host of villains to prevent an all-out war between Zeus and Poseidon. Taking Your Kids on a Summer Road Trip? You'll Need This Movie Playlist
Filed under: DVDs, Family Film Guide, Summer Movies

The car is packed, and you're ready to go on your big summer road trip. Those of you without portable DVD players are going to live it up old-school with sing-alongs, car games (who else still plays rounds of "I Spy"?) and perhaps the occasional audiobook. If you, however, delight in the technological advances that navigation systems and DVD players can bring to a multi-hour drive, here is a peek at my "road-trip playlist" for a long, inter-state ride.
Depending on your children's ages, any combination of these broad-appeal movies is sure to please the kids and let you focus on the road -- not squabbling siblings. Take it from me, I drove three kids 1,000 miles by myself thanks to many of these flicks. Sometimes Mama needed peace and quiet (and caffeine!) to get through.Continue reading Taking Your Kids on a Summer Road Trip? You'll Need This Movie Playlist

New on DVD & Blu-ray, Week of June 22: 'Green Zone' & 'She's Out of My League'
There's war in the air this week. In 'Green Zone,' director Paul Greengrass and actor Matt Damon wage war against Pentagon deceit and lies (about weapons of mass destruction) while waging the war in Iraq. In 'She's Out of My League,' there's the war of the sexes as average-joe Jay Baruchel woes gorgeous Alice Eve, much to the chagrin of his nay-saying friends and family. 'Youth in Revolt' Star Fred Willard Wants to Be a Cowboy
Filed under: Celebrity Interviews, DVDs
Fred Willard's acting career has spanned some five decades and he's played just about every kind of role in every medium -- from children's television to iconic Christopher Guest movies to screwball comedies to horror films.
Willard is the one actor who, it seems, has been in literally everything.
It doesn't hurt that he's also incredibly charming and sweet. His latest TV turn as the Dunphy family grandfather on the hit sitcom 'Modern Family' had him crying over the potential loss of his favorite pooch. Adorable!
Willard spoke with Moviefone about facing the paparazzi with Steve Buscemi on the set of 'Youth in Revolt,' the role he most gets recognized for (and no, it's not a Guest film) and the one director he's dying to work with.Continue reading 'Youth in Revolt' Star Fred Willard Wants to Be a Cowboy

New on DVD & Blu-ray, Week of June 15: 'The Book of Eli,' 'Youth in Revolt'
There's faith and love in the air this week. 'The Book of Eli' stars Denzel Washington as a man of faith traversing a post-apocalyptic landscape to bring hope and salvation to a society ravaged by a war that devastated civilization. 'Youth in Revolt' stars Michael Cera as a geeky young man who will do anything for love -- including creating a rebel-rouser of an alter-ego to bolster his weak self-confidence. And lastly, love was at the core of 'When in Rome' but love couldn't save the embarrassment of this lame rom-com. New on DVD & Blu-ray, Week of June 8: 'Shutter Island' & 'From Paris With Love'
The two major theatrical-to-DVD releases this week will toy with your mind. Martin Scorsese's 'Shutter Island' transports you to an eerie, 1950s world of the criminally insane where a pair of cops (Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo) investigate the disappearance of an inmate from an impregnable island prison; by the film's end nothing is as it seems. And espionage thriller 'From Paris With Love' puts your brain on hold for one-and-a-half hour of mindless, violent, loud entertainment. Be prepared.Continue reading New on DVD & Blu-ray, Week of June 8: 'Shutter Island' & 'From Paris With Love'

New on DVD & Blu-ray, Week of June 1: 'Alice in Wonderland' & 'The Wolfman'
As we segue into summer, two major remakes come to the fore on DVD. First up is Tim Burton's spectacular 'Alice in Wonderland' which, despite quibbles by the purists among us, takes the old 'Alice' adventures and makes something new and exciting. Not so for the remake 'The Wolfman,' which attempts to reconfigure the wolfman legend but only succeeds in slowing us down though the moors of England. A third remake, the successful Steven Spielberg 'War of the Worlds,' comes to Blu-ray this week.Continue reading New on DVD & Blu-ray, Week of June 1: 'Alice in Wonderland' & 'The Wolfman'

New on DVD & Blu-ray, Week of May 25: 'Dear John' & 'The Road'
It's a weak seven days for home video, with two releases that cater to very specialized audiences: 'Dear John,' a sentimental tearjerker directed by Lasse Hallstrom and starring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried as lovers separated by war and distance; and 'The Road,' starring Viggo Mortensen as a dad trying to protect his son from the ravages of a post-apocalyptic landscape. One for the gals, one for the guys. We'll have better luck next week with 'Alice in Wonderland.'Continue reading New on DVD & Blu-ray, Week of May 25: 'Dear John' & 'The Road'

New on DVD & Blu-ray, Week of May 18: 'Invictus' & 'Valentine's Day'
Reality trumps fantasy this week as Clint Eastwood's history lesson 'Invictus' outshines everything else arriving on DVD. With top-notch performances by Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon, the story of South African President Nelson Mandela's attempt to unify his country via rugby is too good to miss. Not so for love (lorn) 'Valentine's Day' and 'The Spy Next Door,' two misfired romantic comedies short on romance and comedy.
